Bible Verses for Catholics

I was baptized and raised as a Roman Catholic. I hope you find these Bible verses as helpful as I do.

The following verses are from the Catholic New American Bible (NAB) just like on the Vatican’s website (unless listed otherwise).

Matthew 23:9 Call no one on earth your father; you have but one Father in heaven, NAB.

At Catholic churches in America we are told to call priests father, even though they are not our father. According to the Bible I had to repent of that sin.

I Cor 9:5 Do we not have the right to take along a Christian wife, as do the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Kephas[/Peter]? NAB

Matt. 8:14, Jesus entered the house of Peter, and saw his mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. NAB.

Yes, some of the Apostles were married.

Exodus 20:4-6 You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; 5 you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, inflicting punishment for their fathers' wickedness on the children of those who hate me, down to the third and fourth generation; 6 but bestowing mercy down to the thousandth generation, on the children of those who love me and keep my commandments. NAB

This is the 2nd commandment of the 10 Commandments. See: Why Does the Catholic Church Tell Us Only 9 for more information about this.

Mary had children after Jesus and she was not a perpetual virgin.

Matt 13:55-56 Is he not the carpenter's son? Is not his mother named Mary and his brothers James, Joseph, Simon, and Judas? 56 Are not his sisters all with us? Where did this man get all this?" NAB

Gal. 1:19, But I did not see any other of the apostles, only James the brother of the Lord. NAB

I Cor 9:5, Do we not have the right to take along a Christian wife, as do the rest of the apostles, and the brothers of the Lord, and Kephas[/Peter]? NAB

See also Mark 3:31-35.

Matthew 6:7 “And when you are praying, do not use meaningless repetition as the Gentiles do, for they suppose that they will be heard for their many words. NASB

When I went to confession, the Catholic priest would tell me to pray the rosary. That is to pray to Mary the "Hail Mary Prayer" over and over for 50+ times and the "Our Father Prayer" 5+ times. To pray like that is sin according to what Jesus told us in Matthew 6:7. So that is another sin I had to repent of. I cannot go to confession and absolve myself of my past sin by praying sinful prayers as the priest told me to do. Now I understand why it felt so uncomfortable praying the rosary.

Whatever someone prays to, that is their god ... right?

Ex 20:3-5 You shall not have other gods besides me. 4 You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything in the sky above or on the earth below or in the waters beneath the earth; 5 you shall not bow down before them or worship them. For I, the LORD, your God, am a jealous God, ...

Saints are dead people, not god. When people die they do not get god-like power to help us. Even if the pope declares them a saint, upon death people have less power to help us than ever before. And images that bear the name of a saint also have no power to help us. I had to repent of the sin of praying to Mary, Joseph and other dead people for a miracle because that violates the first and second commandments and Jesus’ teaching on how to pray. This is so freeing for us! Before I did not know which saint was the best one to pray to or if I made a saint jealous because I changed saints to pray to when my prayers were not answered. Now all we need to do is pray to the Father in the name of Jesus from our heart.

Luke 23:43 He [Jesus] replied to him, "Amen, I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise." NAB  The convicted criminal who was crucified next to Jesus made it into heaven instantly. Jesus spoke much about heaven and hell, never about Purgatory or Limbo. There in nothing in the Christian Bible about Purgatory or Limbo. Hebrews 10:10 tells us Jesus’ sacrifice is complete once and for all. We do not earn our way into heaven by our sacrifice in Purgatory or Limbo or on Earth.

Acts 17:24, The God who made the world and all that is in it, the Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in sanctuaries made by human hands, NAB

I Cor 3:16, Do you not know that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you? NAB

God does not dwell in man-made gold tabernacles in each church. See also: Acts 17:24, I Cor. 6:19-20.

Religious traditions are not sacred.

Mark 7:6-9,13 He [Jesus] responded, "Well did Isaiah prophesy about you hypocrites, as it is written: 'This people honors me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me; 7 In vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines human precepts.' 8 You disregard God's commandment but cling to human tradition." 9 He went on to say, "How well you have set aside the commandment of God in order to uphold your tradition! 13 You nullify the word of God in favor of your tradition that you have handed on. And you do many such things." NAB  See also Col 2:8.
